Viet Huong Oriental Journey
The Viet Huong Oriental Market, a gem within the local community, originated in the 1980s as a modest venture within a small, bustling pool hall. Initially, it began with a mere three shelves stocked with various groceries. This small section of the pool hall, although limited in size, marked the humble beginnings of a business that would flourish remarkably over the years. Gradually, the grocery segment began to expand, fueled by increasing customer interest and a growing inventory of unique products. This expansion was so significant that it eventually outstripped the confines of the pool hall, necessitating a move to a new location.
The store then found its new home in a shared commercial space, cohabiting with another tenant in a compact, 2-suite property. This relocation marked a pivotal point in the market’s history. For over a quarter of a century, the Viet Huong Oriental Market thrived in this location, becoming a staple for those seeking authentic Asian culinary delights. The grocery’s success story, however, faced a temporary setback when the commercial property was sold, leading to the closure of the store.
In 2012, the entrepreneurial spirit of Ms. Rhonda Tran, a Vietnamese mother with a vision, breathed new life into the market. She decided to revive the family business, but with a fresh identity and in a more accessible location, strategically situated in the heart of Savannah. This move was not just a change in location but also a rebranding of the store, which was now named differently and positioned to cater to a wider audience. Her dedication and hard work paid off, as customers were drawn to the store for its authentic Asian offerings and the convenience of its location.
Today, the torch of the family business is carried by Rhonda’s daughter, Hong Tran. Hong, a Vietnamese American, blends the traditional values of her heritage with a modern American outlook. She manages the market with a deep respect for its origins while infusing it with contemporary vigor. The market under her stewardship has become a beloved spot for regular customers, who are vocal in their appreciation for the authentic “tastes of the Orient” that it offers. They also admire the entrepreneurial spirit that Hong inherited from her mother, a spirit that continues to define the market’s ethos.
The Viet Huong Oriental Market is not just a place to purchase Asian food; it’s an experience that invites you to immerse yourself in Asian culture. Customers are encouraged to explore the aisles, each filled with the promise of culinary exploration and discovery. The market has become a source of inspiration for those looking to recreate their favorite Asian dishes or host dinner parties featuring exotic cuisine. An interaction with Hong is always enlightening; she is eager to share her passion for gardening, cooking, and her extensive knowledge of Asian cuisine and recipes. The market stands as a testament to the family’s dedication and serves as an invaluable resource for anyone interested in exploring the rich and diverse world of Asian groceries.
